Top 10 Franchise Films Coming in 2020

 In Film, New Movies, Studios

2019 might not have been the most stimulating of years in terms of Hollywood blockbusters and it would appear as though every major studio is endeavouring to stretch their collectable assets to the limit when it comes to producing “new” content. For example, the re-packaging and re-distribution of all of the animated Disney movies into live-action features is becoming the norm now. Kids these days may not come to understand just how significant a torment this is for the 80’s and 90’s babes.

It is not necessarily the case that film has been terrible. There has been some decent film content this year such as; Shazam!, Rocketman, Captain Marvel. We do have some amazing franchise content coming towards us this Autumn/Winter, The Rise of Skywalker for example, is one in which we are the most ecstatic about!

On this note, 2020 is looking positively hopeful in terms of what the studios have up their sleeves. And yes, we will likely be seeing a lot of repetitiveness, comparable storylines, recurring parts of the “to be continued…” and, a whole lot of familiar faces that will engage and encourage us into multiplexes all over the world. So, whether it be returning franchise movies or brand-new franchise movies we have compiled a list of 10 of most highly anticipated, must-see franchise movies of next year.

If you are a fan of Bad Boys then you definitely won’t have any desire to miss this. Will Smith and Martin Lawrence return in this third instalment in the Bad Boys franchise as Detectives Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett. The action-comedy is said to be set seventeen years into the future and see the cop duo fight against crime once again, this time it’s the Miami drug cartel. New cast members include; Vanessa Hudgens, Alexander Ludwig (Vikings) and Joe Pantoliano.

Or, as it was briefly known: Bond 25. Following on from Spectre, 007 is enjoying retirement when an old pal rocks up with a new mission, in a scramble to rescue a captured scientist from another bad guy armed and in possession terrifying tech. Back in the tux for the final time, Daniel Craig will grace audiences as the infamous spy James Bond. Other cast members for this movie includes; Rami Malek (Academy Award Best Actor Winner 2019), Naomie Harris, Léa Seydoux, Ben Wishaw and Ralph Fiennes. Bond fans, prepare yourselves.

Studio: Sony Pictures          Release Date (UK): April 2020

Wow! Does Tom Cruise look great in this trailer or what? Check it out here. Feel that need for speed as Maverick jets into cinemas next summer and will undoubtedly be a mega-hit given its 1986 prequel Top Gunis a fan favourite. This new instalment will bring back old faces and introduce us to some new, Cruise is joined by Jennifer Connelly, Val Kilmer (Iceman), Ed Harris, Jon Hamm and Miles Teller. The plot seems to be centred around the US associations with Russia once more and perhaps take a look at the changes in which the fighter pilots face in the turn of a new technological era.

Studio: Paramount Pictures           Release Date (UK): July 2020

A new Kingsman movie but wait, what was that? No Eggsy?! Yes, you heard that right. It was confirmed that neither Taron Egerton nor Colin firth will be returning to the franchise this time. However, we do have some new faces such as; Gemma Artenton, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Matthew Goode, Harris Dickinson and Ralph Fiennes. This should be a good one to watch out for with a cast like this, we’re excited to see how this one takes shape. Returning to direct and produce is Matthew Vaughn so the franchise is surely in good hands. If you loved the previous two films then make sure to pay attention and keep this one in mind ahead of its release.

Studio: 20th Century Fox                 Release Date (UK): February 2020

Reese Witherspoon confirmed earlier this year that she would be reprising the role of Elle Woods as she returns for the third time as the sorority gal turned lawyer bombshell. The franchise has been a huge success and even has its own stage show (Legally Blonde: The Musical). At this point the plot is being kept under wraps however, there is no doubt in our minds that we will be seeing copious amounts of pink, a returning cast, a love interest, some witty patter and of course, that famous ‘bend and snap’. So round up your team because and get ready to sparkle!

Studio: MGM                         Release Date (UK): February/May 2020

It would have been wishful thinking to dream that Robert Downey Jr. would be reprising the role of the illustrious Mr. Holmes next year. However, we will have to wait yet another year until we see Sherlock Holmes 3 hit our cinema screens. In the meantime, we have a remake concerning a doctor that can talk to animals. The cast list on this movie is insane – as is the budget! With a mish-mash of CGI and live acting this movie should be an interesting adventure and possibly the perfect pick up we all need in January just to get us all hyped up ahead of award season.

Studio: Universal      Release Date (UK): January 2020

It was announced this year at the San Diego Comic-con that Marvel will be entering Phase 4 of their planned movie projects. It seems as though the space-age superhero flicks really work so why not make some more huh Marvel?! The Eternals boasts a killer cast and includes the likes of, Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, Salma Hayek, Gemma Chan, Kumail Nanjiani, Kit Harrington… the list of stars goes on. As far as the story goes, The Eternals are a collective bunch of super human immortals living on planet Earth that battle evil beings. If you are a Marvel fan you should now refrain from bouncing off the walls with excitement.

Studio: Marvel Studios        Release Date (UK): November 2020

It was only a matter of time really. Margot Robbie is no stranger to playing beautiful blondes so Barbie should be a walk in the park for her. After all, she does sort of posses striking Barbie-like features (we’re not jealous at all). Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird) will sit in the director’s chair for this one. The story is looking to be focused on vanity (funnily enough). In her perfect world, Barbie is excluded for not being beautiful enough, so she sets off on her own creative adventure to find happiness and where she belongs. A fitting storyline for a modern society, we are looking forward to this one and to see what Margot does with the famous doll.

Studio: Warner Bros.           Release Date (UK): May 2020

2. Wonder Woman 84

Now, this movie has a lot to live up to. With its mammoth success with audiences and the acclaim that Wonder Woman received it is no surprise that Gal Gadot and director Patty Jenkins have teamed up once again for the second instalment to the DC superhero flick (well that, and the fact it made Warner Bros. mega bucks). This time we are being transported back to the 80’s and Diana Prince will face off against the Cheetah (Kristen Wiig). Producers of the movie have insisted that this one is not a sequel but in fact a brand-new story – this might partially explain why we will also see the return of Chris Pine. All will be revealed next June when the film is released to the world.

Studio: Warner Bros.           Release Date (UK): June 2020

1. BIRDS OF PREY (and The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)

Miss Robbie has been a very busy bee for the last couple of years and her hard work is absolutely paying off in terms of her movie bio. Birds of Preyis a follow on from Suicide Squad that will see Harley Quinn join forces with an all-star female band of superheroes: “this is not Batman’s Gotham” – Margot Robbie. This movie will showcase the new characters and give the new sirens their time in the spotlight and perhaps pave the way for more epic blockbuster features. The marketing has been amazing so far and very much has our full attention. Hopefully this will be the reawakening Warner Bros. needs in order to rev up their game and keep fans satisfied with their DC content. Look out for Harley early 2020.
