Tarantino in Cannes 2019

 In cannesfilmfestival2019

– Hollywood stars, a penned warning and a love letter –

At first we didn’t know if Tarantino would actually make an appearance in Cannes this year…or did we? The marketing machine behind this movie has been rather clever I have to say. Bravo, Sony!

Tarantino brought a little bit of Hollywood history and glamour with him to the Cannes Croisette as his 9th feature Once Upon a Time…In Hollywood  had its first official screening. The films spot in the limelight comes 25 years to the day Pulp Fiction premiered at Cannes – to which Tarantino also won the Palm d’Or. This movie is said to be somewhat of a love letter to Hollywood from director Quentin Tarantino and his love for the city and the industry he grew up in. Will he take home the gold leaf for his efforts this time around? All shall be revealed tomorrow at the closing festival ceremony.

Pre-Cannes premiere Tarantino took to social media to warn festival viewers from leaking spoilers in Russo bros. fashion:

“Cannes 2019. I love cinema. You love cinema. It’s the journey of discovering a story for the first time. I’m thrilled to be here in Cannes to share ‘Once Upon a Time…In Hollywood’ with the festival audience. The cast and crew have worked so hard to create something original, and I only ask that everyone avoids revealing anything that would prevent later audiences from experiencing the film in the same way. Thank you.”

The cast ascended on the Palias de Festivals on Tuesday 21st May to showcase the first unveiling of the movie to Cannes Film Festival audiences (two months prior to its official theatrical release to the rest of the world). Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie and of course Quentin Tarantino greeted fans before facing the extensive paparazzi bank. It’s always refreshing to see actors engaging with their fans. This red carpet was crazy busy, probably the busiest carpet of Cannes 2019.

Tickets to this screening were like gold dust as one can imagine, and were not readily available even to festival goers. As much as I tried, I could not source a ticket (*sad little crying face*). As a massive Tarantino fan, this event would have made the festival so much more magical. Alas it was not to be. However, on the plus side I will get to watch it at my local Odeon cinema back home once it has been released in the UK in July. I hope there will be a special premiere screening for Odeon Limitless members? *Wink wink, nudge nudge* Odeon.

The official press conference for Once Upon a Time…In Hollywood took place inside the Palais de Festivals on the 22nd May in front of journalists and media outlets. The cast addressed some tough, critical and controversial questions involving chat around female representation, abuse towards women, lack of screen time for Margot, Roman Polanski and real life traumatic storytelling.

I watched the press feed live and I have to say that the expressions and body language from Tarantino would most definitely suggest he was in no mood to be challenged or up for taking any shit. Tarantino directly shut down a couple of reporters when he didn’t feel the need to justify or explain himself.

One reporter asked why Margot Robbie didn’t have as much screen time as her fellow male counterparts to which Tarantino replied, “Well, I just reject your hypothesis.” End of story. Robbie attempted to tactfully answer the question as best she could but it was clear that there was an awkwardness in the air after that, I mean, how could there not be. There was further comments made regarding violence against women to which Brad interjected at one point adding, “I didn’t see it as a rage against individuals but a rage against a loss of innocence.”

This is a most interesting interview to watch, I admire the fact answers were not sugar coated as to shy away from the truth or, how Tarantino actually feels about certain topics or questions asked from reporters.
