Highlights from the D23 EXPO 2019

In Conventions, Film Events, Industry, PR & Events, Studios, VOD

In case you were wondering, the D23 (Disney) Expo pops up yearly in Anaheim, California. It is basically Comic-Con but for Disney devotees: ‘The Ultimate Disney Fan Event’. It includes a three-day special convention comprising of shopping, celebrity panels, exclusive announcements, performances, all of your favourite Disney characters and much more.

This year was full of amazing new content to get you all up in your feels for the remainder of the year. If (like us) you are a true Disney fan then this event is one you should definitely be checking out annually.

We paid special attention to the festivities and goings-on during last weekend’s event and have compiled a nice little post with (what we think) were the most important/exciting announcements. Grasp that lightsaber because we have an extremely magical year ahead of us!

It is no secret now that Disney is launching their own streaming service – it was only a matter of time really. Zooming onto screens this November in five major territories to begin with (US, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and the Netherlands). Unfortunately, this is a major downer for us loyal UK Disney fans as there has not yet been any confirmation of a British release date. Fingers crossed we will have some positive news around this in the new year.

It has been reported that Disney plan on rolling out the platform to all other major markets within a two-year period, so don’t worry, you’ll be able to see that special, super-hyped up, Disney+ access only content… eventually. With content brought to the platform from Marvel, Pixar, Star Wars, National Geographic and of course, Disney, it will become your one stop shop for EVERYTHING Disney. There is a high possibility that we will likely see other brands join the streaming force as Disney plan to take over the world, brands such as X-Men, maybe not Deadpool…will surely be lined up and ready.

Movie-wise… there will be a lot released over the next couple of years and here is a little flavour of what you can expect:

  • Frozen 2 – November 2019
  • Lady and the Tramp – November 2019 (Disney+)
  • Noelle – November 2019 (Disney+)
  • Onward – March 2020
  • Mulan – March 2020
  • Soul – June 2020
  • Jungle Cruise – July 2020
  • Raya and the Lost Dragon – November 2020
  • The Eternals – 2020
  • Cruella – May 2021
  • Black Panther 2 – 2022

It is very easy to get confused about all of the new stuff coming to us from Disney and when it comes to their television content, this is no exception. Lets’ break this down into a simpler context.

  • She Hulk
  • What If?
  • Marvel
  • Moon Knight
  • The Falcon and The Winter Soldier
  • Loki
  • Hawkeye
  • WandaVision

  • Forky Asks a Question

Star Wars

Of course Star Wars has its own segment. I mean, it’s Star Wars. The Rise of Skywalker had its own separate showcase at the D23 Expo. J.J. Abrams brought the cast onto the stage and presented the new poster for the film as well as new footage.

The trailer which was revealed at the panel, was imbedded amongst a sizzle reel that presented the audience with snippets from the past nine movies and then exposed the new content from The Rise of Skywalker. This new footage shows a mysterious dark Rey wielding a red double-ended lightsaber and C-3P0 with mega-strange red eyes! Check out the trailer below:
